our short-lived history and silly philosophy

Cat & Rat's Battle Radio is KZSC Santa Cruz's ONLY radio show that's half game show, half talk show, half music show, and 100% bad at math. Airing every Thursday night @ Midnight on 88.1 fm in Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties and on kzsc.fm/listen.

Ultimate radio buddies DJs rat & Catrophy wanted a good excuse to hang out more, so they came up with this show in the late summer of 2023. C&RBR is a funtime experiment in developing games meant to be played on the radio -- entertaining for both disk jockeys and listeners. 

Catrophy has been DJing on KZSC since February 2022, hosting Feline Funky since April 2022. rat has been squeakin' on air since February 2023 and hosting Pack Rat's Rat Trap since April 2023! 

Both mammals frequented The Graveyard Shift, a free-form late-nite show created for DJs to comfortably hang out and build up copius amounts of extra on-air hours, which unofficially started Fall 2022 and officially concluded Spring 2023. Both enjoyed the practice and created their Battle Radio in a similar vein -- as a way for DJs to spend more time together, get comfortable on the mic, and fill the hours nobody would be on otherwise.

This archival site is maintained by DJ Catrophy (yours truly) as part of their ARTG 170 Senior capstone series. In the future, they hope to keep a backlog of game rules for other DJs to use in the future!

Radio & games are both arts of ephemera, magic circles, and exhibition. Following, bending, and creating rulesets to establish private worlds between those who engage or witness. Allowing everyday scaredy cats to occupy a slightly different world and craft of self expression. Challenging the norms of radio programming and hopefully encouraging silly billies to keep having late-night fun long after we're gone. Also, both are lots of fun and let you be a little animal guy.
